Following the first Austrian Samothrace expedition in 1873, which was widely regarded as a success, Alexander Conze's team planned another excavation campaign on the island. On 16 December 1874, Conze obtained the Emperor's approval for this second expedition, which was officially intended to ‘complete the scientific expedition’ of 1873. The state budget for 1875 allocated 10,000 guilders for this purpose, and April 1875 was set as the expedition period.
