Exhibition: Camera on Board. Between the Arctic and the South Seas, 1855–1917
Opening: Thu, 20 Aug 2026, 7 pm On view: 21 Aug – 27 Nov 2026
Adventurers and admirals, sailors and scientists – those who sailed the world's oceans under the Austrian flag brought home more than views of distant shores between the polar sea and the tropics. From 1855 onwards, the camera was at work on board as well.
The ship: a prototypical space where otherwise separate social groups met face to face. It served as a backdrop for self-fashioning as much as for shifting stagings of the "others" – crews, guests, chance encounters.
Everything was photographed: a yacht party off Samoa. Christmas aboard a warship in the Red Sea. A convict transport in the Levant. Admiral Tegetthoff's captured cannons in the Baltic. And the far-from-glorious daily routine of the crews.
Visits possible at any time by prior appointment; guided tours by arrangement.
