The Memoirs of Imperial and Royal (k.u.k.) Naval Artillery Chief Engineer, First Class, Benjamin Sabath

The memoirs of Benjamin "Benno" Sabath offer an unusually personal view of life in the Austro-Hungarian Navy at the turn of the twentieth century.

They trace the path of a man born into modest circumstances who, through education, discipline and professional commitment, rose to the technical officer corps of the Austro-Hungarian Navy.

Sabath's recollections combine an individual story of education and career with insights into training, technical service and everyday military life. They also reflect the society of the period and show how much education and professional qualifications could mean for social advancement.

Sabath's perspective as a Jewish naval engineer deserves particular attention. His account suggests that his religious background played only a minor role in his career within the Imperial and Royal Navy. His memoirs therefore invite a closer look at the denominational make-up of the Habsburg naval officer corps and the particular institutional conditions under which it operated.

The memoirs are thus more than an autobiography: they are a historical source of particular value. They link personal experience with the history of an institution whose members came from a wide range of social, regional and religious backgrounds.

This volume makes Benjamin Sabath's memoirs available in this context for the first time and places them in their historical setting. Documents and photographs from the family archive accompany the text and illustrate the life of the naval engineer and the times he lived in.

The result is the portrait of a remarkable life and, at the same time, a personal panorama of the Austro-Hungarian Navy as seen by one of its technical officers.

The book is published in German.
